Going Vegan
The transition to a vegan lifestyle Going vegan is the best choice you can make for the animals, the planet and your health. We hope this website will make it easier for new and aspiring vegans to live a cruelty-free lifestyle. If you’ve always been a non-vegan it might seem a bit daunting at first to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Some people become vegan overnight, for others it is a gradual process. It may be a bit of an adjustment at first, but after living as a vegan for a few weeks it will probably become second nature and you’ll wonder “why didn’t I do this a long time ago?”. Remember that transitioning to a vegan lifestyle is your personal decision and the approach you want to take is up to you. Below are some examples of how you could approach becoming a vegan: “The 1, 2, 3, Vegan!” Approach If you find it difficult to go completely vegan at once, why not try eating a just vegan breakfast for a few weeks as your first step? You can experiment with new recipes and read more about the benefits of becoming a vegan. Once you’ve been having vegan breakfasts for…

Tips for being vegan
Tip #1 Google It! If you have a question about veganism, the Internet is often a great place to start looking for answers. Try Googling “is [product name] vegan” for some fast results. There are many vegan/vegetarian forums based in Australia and around the world. Often if you’ve had a question about something, another vegan has too. Check out these forums for heaps of useful information from the worldwide vegan community: www.vegsoc.org.au (Queensland-based but has members from all over Australia) www.veganforum.com (with Australia/NZ threads for local vegans) www.postpunkkitchen.com/forum/index.php (Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s website – she is a famous vegan chef) www.veggieboards.com (a vegetarian forum but has many vegans posting as well) Tip #2 Be a Happy, Healthy Vegan It can be difficult for new vegans to deal with how their omnivorous friends and family respond to their new lifestyle. Whilst some vegans find their friends and family supportive, others might find it hard to deal with questions and teasing. You just need to keep in mind that you’re doing this for reasons that you believe in. Eventually your friends and family will see that this isn’t just a phase and they will hopefully learn to adjust. If you live with your parents and…

Rural Vegans
For people living outside the Perth metro area, it might seem like there is very little for vegans. While it would be easy to find fruit, vegetables, legumes, other speciality items will probably be a bit harder to find. There are quite few websites that you can order supplies from, to be delivered to you. Check out the “home delivery section”, under “Shopping”. To find vegan food when eating out look up the following places listed under Eating Out section: Sunbreakers (Mandurah) Samudra (Dunsborough)

However we decided against it in order to protect the privacy of doctors who may not want to publicly advertise that they support veganism. The American Dietetic Association has stated that vegan diets are suitable for all stages of life, so don’t let your doctor tell you otherwise! Try to find a doctor that you are comfortable with and that will help you live healthily as a vegan, rather than one that will try to urge you to consume animal products.

Companion Animals
Vegan diet for companion animals Non-human animals obviously have different nutritional needs to humans so we recommend that people do their own research about what they should feed a vegan companion animal to ensure their companion animal gets all the required nutrients. For a list of vegan pet food available see the “Shopping” section, on page #. For more information on a vegan diet for companion animals check out: www.vegepets.info www.vegpets.com www.vegancats.com www.vegandognutritionassociation.com Adopting companion animals We would urge people to not adopt companion animals from pet shops, licensed breeders or backyard breeders, and to definitely not breed any animals themselves. Most of the animals in pet shops come from puppy mills, intensive breeding operations which focus on the commercial gain of breeding puppies rather than the interests of the animals, who are often in poor physical and psychological health. There are many animals that are in desperate need of a home which is why the most ethical choice if you want a companion animal is to adopt one from a shelter. Here are some shelters where you can adopt companion animals: The Dog’s Refuge Home (www.dogshome.org.au) Animal Protection Society (www.animalprotectionsociety.westnet.com.au) Swan Animal Haven (www.swananimalhaven.asn.au)
